Project Overview
Ottawa, Kansas - Franklin County Courthouse
Historic Masonry Restoration and Time Capsule Preservation
In 1892, masons working on the Franklin County Courthouse sealed a piece of their lives into the building’s stone. More than a century later, that same craftsmanship protected the time capsule until it was uncovered during restoration.
This project became more than masonry repair. It became a moment of connection between the builders of the past and those entrusted with the building’s future. GKW Group was honored to serve as that bridge.
The Franklin County Courthouse is not only a historic structure, but a working civic building that continues to serve the community every day. Preserving its masonry systems was critical to maintaining both its structural integrity and its role as a local landmark. Any restoration effort needed to balance historical preservation with long term performance and safety.
Historic masonry behaves differently than modern construction. Original materials, construction techniques, and aging patterns must be understood before meaningful repairs can be made. This project required careful evaluation of existing stone, mortar compatibility, and load transfer to ensure that repairs reinforced the building without altering its character.
What began as a planned restoration effort quickly became an opportunity to reconnect with the original builders of the courthouse. The discovery and preservation of the 1892 time capsule added another layer of responsibility, reinforcing the importance of precision, patience, and respect throughout every phase of the work.
A Moment Frozen in 1892
Discovering the Original Time Capsule
The year was 1892. Grover Cleveland was President. Ellis Island had just opened its doors. In Ottawa, Kansas, masons carefully sealed a time capsule into the courthouse cornerstone, trusting their workmanship to protect it for generations.
During restoration, GKW uncovered the stone exactly where history said it would be. Extracting a relic like this requires more than tools. It requires a deep understanding of historic materials, load paths, and original construction methods.
The team approached the extraction as a surgical procedure, ensuring both the stone and the story inside remained intact.
“Extracting a relic like this requires more than just tools. It requires a deep understanding of historic materials.”
Precision, Patience, and Trust
Safely Recovering a Century Old Artifact
Recovering a piece of history from 1892 is not something most crews encounter. When the challenge arose, the GKW team was ready.
The time capsule was not part of the original scope. Discovering it required an immediate and careful pivot. Cutting into historic stone demanded meticulous attention to detail to avoid disturbing the artifact inside.
This moment highlighted the importance of restoration expertise. Anticipating the unknown and responding without compromising schedule or structure is what separates a specialist from a standard contractor.
“Another contractor might have missed this entirely, or worse, destroyed it.”
Community Witness to History
Sealing the New Time Capsule
It is not every day a masonry crew has an audience.
Residents and officials gathered to watch the new time capsule sealed into the courthouse, marking the next chapter of the building’s story. Having the community present was not just ceremonial. It was a reminder that this structure belongs to the people it serves.
Preservation is not only about materials. It is about continuity, shared responsibility, and contribution to the future.
“Having the community there to witness this contribution to the future is all a part of why we do what we do.”
Building for a Future We Will Not See
Preservation with Purpose
The original masons carved a hollow into the courthouse stone and sealed it with confidence. They trusted their work to endure rain, snow, and time.
Finding that capsule more than 100 years later was a reminder that they were thinking about the future. Now, it was GKW’s turn to return the favor.
This restoration was completed with the same intent. The building was reinforced, the stone resealed, and a new message sent forward to the year 2125.
“We won’t be here in 2125. But thanks to this restoration, this building and time capsule will be.”
A Trusted Local Partner in Preservation
Stewardship Beyond the Project
When a community plans for a building to survive another 100 years, they need more than a contractor. They need a local partner in preservation.
Through forensic assessment and precise restoration, GKW reinforced the integrity of the Franklin County Courthouse while honoring its history. The result is a structure prepared to endure, protect its past, and serve future generations.
“This building is a landmark. It is the heart of this community, and it means everything to the city it serves. Our role was not simply to repair what was broken, but to honor that legacy, preserve its history, and ensure it stands stronger than ever before. That responsibility is one we are proud to carry.”
